Graphic Design I (Sophomore)
This course is an introduction to the basic principles and concepts of graphic design. Hands-on projects will develop idea generation, problem solving, and technical skills. The use of type, image, and visual organization as components of effective communication will be introduced. Presentation of ideas and the development of verbal skills will be stressed. Projects will be completed using industry standard software.

Graphic Design II (Junior)
This course addresses the anatomy, history, basic principles and creative possibilities of typography. Students investigate how type functions as a system of communication and as an abstract visual element. Projects emphasize legibility, readability and expression. Experimentation with form and communication will be stressed. Presentation of ideas and the development of verbal skills will be stressed. Projects will be completed using industry standard software.

Beginning Web Design (Junior)
Art 375 is an introduction to the basic principles of web site design and planning. It focuses on a mixture of technical skills, content development, interactivity, and navigation. There will be an emphasis on developing strong, appropriate visuals for each project. Students will be introduced to industry standard web design software.

Typography (Sophomore)
Typography is the visualization of spoken language. Through lectures, demonstrations, and studio projects, students are introduced to all aspects of typography. Course covers type terminology, typographic grids, hierarchy, typographic design, and history.

Digital Illustration (Junior/Senior)
This computer-based course addresses the concepts and techniques necessary to create illustrations for print, web, and multimedia applications. Students learn a graphic and conceptual approach to illustration through demonstrations and projects, which builds on the existing knowledge of design and drawing. Creativity, content, communication, and technical proficiency are emphasized.

Print Design and Production (Junior/Senior)
This course focuses on the design and production of printed material. Professional graphic design and pre-press production practices are emphasized. This computer studio course will include the study of typography, page design, and page anatomy. At the conclusion of this class, the student will be able to conceptualize, design, and produce projects for a wide variety of pre-press demands.

Typography
Typography is an introduction to the history of the evolution and application of typography for the perception of meaning, intention, and personality of the written word. We will study the history of typography through technological advancements that propelled type to what it is today. We will become intimately knowledgeable of the anatomy of type and all the jargon that goes along with this highly important aspect of design.

Graphic Symbolism
We will examine the importance of symbols in design. Logos and other symbolic images will be examined in historic and contemporary contexts. Graphic elements, simplified imagery, and abstract shapes, as well as typography will be used to create individualized logo designs and images.
