Digital Illustration

description/overview

This computer-based course addresses the concepts and techniques necessary to create illustrations for print, web, and multimedia applications. Students learn a graphic and conceptual approach to illustration through demonstrations and projects, which builds on the existing knowledge of design and drawing. Projects range from business and information graphics to editorial, advertising, and technical illustration. Creativity, content, communication, and technical proficiency are emphasized.

The purpose of this course is to develop the student’s ability to:

  • Develop an understanding of the history of illustration;
  • Develop an awareness of the emotional and intellectual potential of image;
  • Recognize, evaluate and think critically about illustration;
  • Develop a personal body of work;
  • Develop specific familiarity with illustration software;
  • Familiarize himself/herself with professional the practices of graphic artists;
  • Develop an understanding of various forms of computer art and be able to decide which software application is best suited for a specific medium

Materials/Supplies SKETCHBOOK! File storage to backup your work; 8 GB USB Drive (or greater) or portable hard drive. Space is available on the Fine Arts server; however, NEVER keep your work in one location! General art supplies such as graph paper, tracing paper, pencils, erasers, Sharpie markers, etc. Presentation supplies like mounting board, metal ruler, x-acto knife, spray mount, etc.

MAJOR PROJECTS (100 points each)
(1) Historic Portrait, (2) Editorial: book jacket, (3) Playtime: magnetic doll, (4) Infographic
Concept and Effectiveness = 50 points
Craftsmanship (mock-ups & final) = 25 points
Development and Critique = 25 points

SKILL EXERCISES (20 points each)
The majority of class periods will have a reading quiz and/or hands-on activity. Participation will earn a ‘C’ and only will improve with eagerness and understanding of the objective.
